Foot orthoses

Foot orthoses are specialist insoles for both children and adults, prescribed to treat a variety of conditions including:

Chronic heel, foot, knee or low back pain
Flat feet, high arched feet
Morton’s neuroma
Plantar fasciitis (arch strain)
Metatarsalgia (forefoot pain)
Heel spurs (policeman’s heel)
Bunions
Poor walking alignment
Shin splints
Ankle instability
Diabetes
Arthritis
Leg length differences
 

There are 2 categories of specialist insoles: 

Functional  foot orthoses
FFOs (also called “orthotics”) are special insoles that provide support to the foot and maximise optimal function. They work by altering the position of the foot and the forces transmitted through it in standing, walking and running and thus better distributing impact forces throughout the body. This can lead to improved posture, balance and movement, improve sports performance and reduced risk of injury and pain in the
feet, ankles, knees, hips and lower back.

Just like a house needs firm foundations, our body needs a well aligned, firm base i.e., our feet.

Functional foot orthoses can be pre-fabricated, semi-custom made or totally custom made. After a detailed  biomechanical assessment and gait analysis, your Orthotist will advise you whether you could benefit from orthoses and which type is most appropriate for your individual needs. 
 

Accommodative insoles (Total Contact Inlays TCIs)

If your feet are not sufficiently mobile to be moved into an improved position, the insoles will
instead be designed to accommodate deformity and provide cushioning and protection. These are called Total Contact Inlays (TCIs). Diabetic feet commonly require this type of insole with a soft Poron top cover to provide protection and shock absorption.
 

 

There are a number of ways to record your foot shape and provide the best fit for you – scan, cast, foam mould or template matching. The insoles will be milled by a Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machine, vacuum moulded or hand built from a variety of materials - plastics, carbon fibre, Ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) foams, poron, leather, and various topcovers. Your prescription will depend on your foot morphology, your weight and activity, the type of shoes the insoles will be worn with, and your personal preference.
