Cerebral Palsy is a term used to describe a group of disorders affecting voluntary bodily movement and muscle co-ordination.
Cerebral Palsy is a non- contagious and non progressive condition that is caused by abnormal brain development or injury to the brain as it develops. This trauma can occur, before, during, after birth, or during early childhood and its effects can vary widely.
Depending on the specific area of the brain affected and severity of the abnormality, varying degrees of difficulties occur. In its mildest form, Cerebral Palsy can result in slight awkwardness in movement which is hardly noticeable but at its most severe, the individual may require help with many or all the aspects of daily life.
As each and every client will be affected by this disorder in a personal way, it is of great importance that any treatments and therapies are always tailored specifically to their individual needs.
At Hampshire Orthotics we carefully consult with individuals diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy and aim to truly understand the nature of the client’s condition so that we can achieve the following therapeutic goals:-
1. reduce or redistribute mechanical loads
2. prevent, reduce or stabilize joint and limb misalignment and deformity
3. modify the range of motion and stability of a joint
4. compensate for muscle weakness and control muscle hyperactivity
5. enhance posture control and gait biomechanics
